Buyer
A buyer is responsible for researching, sourcing, and purchasing the products that a store/company will sell. They need to make sure that the right products are available at the right time, in the right quantities, and at the right price for the specific consumer market. As a result, they rely heavily on analyzing market/sales trends and consumer preferences to make informed decisions.
Example responsibilities include:
- Identifying and working around customer preferences through market research
- Negotiating with suppliers and vendors to ensure best quality and price of merchandise
- Discovering and purchasing new products for stores (ex: department stores, outlets, small shops)
- Assisting with marketing and sales strategies
Merchandiser
The primary goal of retail merchandisers is to showcase products of a store in an engaging and appealing way to motivate customers to make a purchase. They are responsible for managing every aspect of the product’s journey from the minute it is delivered to the store to when the customers buy the product. They work closely with suppliers, retailers, and manufacturers to execute strategies that’ll drive sales and enhance the shopping experience.
