From Walking on Eggshells to Standing on Firm Ground

Friday, January 30  /  Dinan Hall 112, University of Pennsylvania

1:00 PM – 1:30 PM Lunch
1:30 PM – 4:30 PM · UGR Workshop with Quinn Bauriedel, Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Pig Iron Theatre

This 3-hour, experiential workshop is intended to open up a space for rich dialogue through a theatrical and playful lens. Rather than running away from differences of opinion, this workshop aims to move toward differences, acknowledging that monocultures lack depth and an enriched life comes from deeper and layered critical thinking. Practicing the art of dialogue allows an individual to recognize how their own curiosity can lead to connections with others that bridge differences, yielding a more positive educational or professional experience. Further, productive dialogue can shape one's own authentic voice, thereby finding the bravery of self-expression and advancing our own self-awareness. In order to excel, one must practice, and this workshop is a laboratory to practice skills in communication, listening, and forging connections across differences.

Living with uncertainty and ambiguity is a common issue facing individuals. Being prepared to initiate, foster, and grow from productive dialogue will serve you both within this university community and far beyond. But what are the ingredients of a productive dialogue? And how can we recognize and push against the forces that might lead to groupthink, self-censorship, and avoidance of layered and uncomfortable dialogue? How and when can someone change their mind or shift or evolve their beliefs?

We’re excited to have you join us as part of this pilot cohort!  Thank you for your commitment to this work and for helping to shape the future of Productive Dialogue programming at Wharton.

Please reach out to Megan O’Malley, with any questions.

We look forward to kicking off this journey with you!
