Details
The holiday originally stems from pagan celebrations of the earth's fertility and the start of longer days. Crepes were made to use up extra wheat before a new harvest and their shape symbolizes the sun. In the 5th century the tradition was tied to Catholicism during the festival of chandelles when the Pope handed out galettes to poor pilgrims. The date marks when Jesus was presented to the temple of Jerusalem.
